Colour Kit (260-2963) Hints and Tips Faxback Doc. # 3633
JP 1000

To obtain the highest quality of colour for the type of document you wish
to print, the following tips may prove useful to you:

Before setting the printing parameters for the document to be printed,
print first on PLAIN PAPER in DRAFT or ECONOMY mode to get an idea of
the result and to assess the intensity level required.

If you do not require particularly bright or clearly defined colours,
print on PLAIN PAPER in STANDARD mode.

If the definition and luminosity of the colors are important in order
to capture the reader's attention, use special types of paper (COATED
PAPER) in HIGH QUALITY or PRESENTATION mode. Considering the cost of
these types of paper, do not risk wasting it by setting a quality that
   could give poorer results.

If you have to prepare TRANSPARENCIES for projection, set the highest
   quality: PRESENTATION.

If you have to print images characterized by PLAIN COLOURS, set COARSE
as the DITHERING value, for images with DIFFERENT SHADES OF COLOUR, set
   FINE.

How to solve printing problems

Printing problems can be divided into three groups:

   Problems due to DRIVER SETTINGS.

   Problems due to MECHANICAL FACTORS.

Problems due to the technology used.

   1) INCORRECT DRIVER SETTINGS MAY LEAD TO COLOURS THAT SEEM FADED,
UNCLEAR or THAT DO NOT CORRESPOND TO THE COLOURS ON THE VIDEO
SCREEN. To solve these problems, proceed as follows:

       Modify the intensity.

Set a higher print quality (for example, High Quality instead of
       Standard).

       Change the type of paper.

   2) MECHANICAL FACTORS may lead to colours with CLEAR, DARK or NON-
UNIFORM BANDS. To solve these problems, proceed as follows:

       Set a higher print quality.

Clean the print head nozzles by following the procedure described
       in the printer's user manual.

If this has no effect, one of the colors of ink is running out:
       replace the print head.

   3) The TECHNOLOGY used by the printer may lead to the following
       problems:

BLOOMING, i.e ink spreading outside the printing area, producing
the characteristic RING effect, or excessive ink penetration, with
the ink passing through to the other side of the paper. This
problem can be solved by reducing the intensity or the ink
consumption (for example, by selecting the Economy mode) or by
using a type of paper with a different degree of absorption.

WICKING, i.e. ink spreading along the fibers in the paper,
producing the characteristic SPIDER WEB effect. This problem can
be solved first by checking that you are printing on the correct
side of the paper (as indicated on the box) and, if this is the
case, by using a different type of paper.

BLEEDING, i.e. two adjacent colours MIXING with one other. This
problem can be solved in the same way as blooming.

This kit enables you to make use of the colour printing feature of the
bubble ink jet printer.

The document that you are reading will help you to do this by describing:

   Composition of the kit
How to set up the printer for colour printing
How to use the print head case
Print test and how to test the print head function

Keep this booklet with the printer user guide.

Composition of the kit

The kit contains the parts and instructions necessary to enable colour
printing:

1. Printer driver on a 3.5" diskette
2. Box containing a colour print head
3. Print head case
4. Printer driver user guide
5. "An invitation to colour"

How to set up the printer for colour printing

This procedure consists of the following two steps:

   Installation of the printer driver

Assembly of the colour print head

Having set up the printer, use the black ink print head for traditional
printing (in black and white) and the colour print head to produce colour
or mixed (black + colour) documents.

How to use the print head case

The print head case is used for keeping whichever print head you are not
using: in this way, the ink will not dry or clog, thus increasing the
efficiency and life of the print head.

There are two separate compartments inside the case, one for the black
printhead and the other for the colour print head - plus a slot containing
a brush for cleaning the contacts, described later on.

IMPORTANT

The case must always be kept in an upright position.

INSERTING THE PRINT HEAD IN THE CASE

   Open the lid
Insert the print head in the correct compartment
Press the print head down until you hear a click
   Close the lid

REMOVING THE PRINT HEAD FROM THE CASE

   Open the lid
Push and hold the lever towards the rear to release the print head
Remove the print head by sliding it upwards out of the compartment
   Close the lid
