Palmtop solves LAN problem

I recently found another, unexpected use for the HP 100LX. Our firm was called upon to assist a client who had experienced a data communications failure between their main office and a branch office about 35 miles away. They have a centralized LAN (local-area-network) connected to a remote office via multiplexers and a dedicated telephone line.

At first we were unable to diagnose the problem because we were unfamiliar with the multiplexers and communications setup. However, the documentation indicated we could connect to the multiplexer via an RS-232 command port. I had my 100LX and assorted cables so I connected it up.

Using a terminal emulation program I was able to run diagnostics on both units and found the problem. When a replacement multiplexer arrived I configured it with the 100LX attached to it, and had our client up and running (although not as quickly as we might have liked).

I found the HP 100LX to be excellent for the purpose. Before I left, I captured the diagnostic sessions to a file and added editing comments via Memo. Then I changed adapters and printed the documentation out for our client on their laser printer.

I have to admit, I have been using the HP 100LX for over a year now and it's the first portable/laptop/notebook that I have stayed with for over 6 months since I got into the computer business fifteen years ago. I guess its the size and functionality that attracts me. It simply does everything I need.
